Balfour Infant School

Lunch Arrangements

***PLEASE NOTE WE ARE A NUT FREE SCHOOL***

School Meals

All pupils of Infant School age are entitled to a free school meal. This may be taken as a hot school dinner, which is cooked on the premises or a school produced packed lunch.

Pupils taking a hot school dinner choose their lunch from the daily option before helping themselves to salad and fruit from the Salad Cart. We ask parents to equip their child with the skills to use a knife and fork independently.

The school produced packed lunch comprises of a sandwich and a desert from the daily option. Pupils then help themselves to salad and fruit from the Salad Cart.

Alternatively pupils may bring a packed lunch from home. Please see below for guidance regarding home packed lunches.

If at any time you wish to change your child’s lunchtime eating arrangements please notify the office in advance as this will ensure that a dinner is always available for your child and that dinners are not cooked and wasted.

Home Packed Lunches

If your child brings a home packed lunch please would you bear the following in mind:-

Please pack sandwich in foil or a suitable container that can be opened by the child

Drinks should be put into an unbreakable flask with a cup type lid from which the child can drink or individual cartons. Cans of fizzy drinks, glass bottles or glass lined flasks are not allowed for safety reasons. Water and beakers will be available for those who need it.

Storage of lunches is a great problem in school. Please use a plastic container or small lunch bag; we do not have room to store backpacks.

As sweets, including bars of chocolate, are not allowed in school, please do not include them in a packed lunch.

Please remember we are a nut free school, nuts of any kind are not permitted. This includes sandwich spreads such as peanut butter or nutella.

Free School Meals

All pupils from Reception to the end of Year 2 are entitled to a Universal Free School Meal under the government initiative. However, it is still vitally important for parents in receipt of certain benefits to apply for the old style free school meals to enable the school to receive extra funding known as pupil premium. We use these funds to narrow the gap in attainment between specific groups of pupils. Pupils who qualify for pupil premium funding are entitled to half price trips and clubs.

Details of the benefits of Pupil Premium are available to view in the Pupil Premium section of this website. If you think you may be eligible for this extra funding please apply online on the Medway Council website - apply for free school meals or call into the school office where we will be able to help you.
