Severe weather procedure

We will always aim to keep the school open wherever possible, however if we are unable to open we will notify you at the earliest opportunity. In the event of heavy snow fall during the course of a school day we will inform you if we take the decision to close the school early. It is extremely important therefore that we have up to date telephone numbers for you. Please be assured that if we close the school early, all children will be held safely in school until collected.  Following a period of closure, a message will be sent out as soon as we know we can re-open the school.  Please see below various methods available to enable you to find out if our school is open during severe weather conditions. Please be assured that if there are no messages available then our school is open as normal.

As early as possible in the morning the school will send a message via the Balfour Infant School App if the school is closed.

OpenCheck for Parents: We will notify OpenCheck as soon as possible on the day.  OpenCheck allows to you check the status of your child’s school.  This easy-to-use service can be accessed via  Once on the site from the ‘Select an Authority’ dropdown list please choose Medway and from the ‘Select a School’ dropdown please select Balfour Infant School.

We will update our School Website as soon as possible; however the website can become flooded if accessed by hundreds of parents.

We will notify Heart FM radio station if our school is closed for the day or closing early due to adverse weather.  Our school will not be mentioned on the radio if we are open as usual

Please do not confuse radio announcements for Balfour Infant School with those for Balfour Junior School.  As we are separate schools with members of staff living at different locations the two schools are not always closed at the same time.

Please can I ask that you do not telephone the school to ask if we are open, as this can block our phone lines. Please use our Balfour Infant School App facility, our Website, the Radio or OpenCheck for information, thus leaving our telephone line open for emergency parental or school use.
